‘Taking 5’ on Take 5… (New video)

Hi there boys and girls…

It’s Alex here saying ‘Hi and Welcome’ to my all new BassGuitarTips.Com blog… Version 2.0 if you will…

It’s a work-in-progress so I’ll be adding, removing and shifting stuff around as we go along, but do make sure you bookmark this page and check back often because unlike my previous blog I’ll try to post to this one a lot more often 🙂

To kick off the new year, and the new blog I’m taking a quick break from the super secret new project I’ve been working like a madman on for the last several months, to record a cool little video here for ya.

It’s a simple little jam over a song many of you might have heard before called…… ‘Take 5’.

—– SIDE NOTE —–

I’ll try to post a follow up video to this where I break down the bass line I play in step by step detail — But please — this is subject to time constraints as my new project/evil grand scheme has to get done this month.

—– SIDE NOTE —–

Well ’nuff said…

Take a look at the video… Others will follow 😉 but for now I gotta get back to work.

Let’s me also take the time to say Happy New Year to you and your family. I wish all our customers and subscribers health, happiness, prosperity and consistent and significant improvement in your bass playing!

Stay cool, keep up and we’ll talk soon.

– Alex Sampson

P.S.
Apparently a bit of a buzz is already going down about what I’ve been up to for the past several months, and folks have been writing our office with very probing questions. 🙂

I’ll be updating you all a lot more in the next couple weeks but I can say this now… What I’ve been putting together is going to *ROCK THE HOUSE*. (smile)

…I’ll be sure to post some pics, video previews and lots of cool stuff as we go along but for now… Let’s ‘Take 5.’

P.P.S.
Oh yeah be sure to use the box below to leave your reply/comments… Depending on the feedback I’ll know if to do more videos…

If there’re no comments I’ll have to assume that you ‘folks-es’ aren’t very interested… My pride will get hurt, and I may have to turn to a life of drowning my sorrows in steaks, garlic shrimp scampi and a dangerous number of refills of orange/pineapple fruit juice…

So post your comments… I’ve heard that red meat can be dangerous to your health, and too much citrus can lead to art-ha-rite-iss… 😉

NOTE: THIS VIDEO is just the demonstration, as explained in the post above the DETAILED VIDEO breaking down the bass line WILL FOLLOW. Don’t worry, I won’t leave you hanging 🙂 And yes there will be close-ups, note names given etc. Stay cool.

    1. GREAT START, young man! That’s S-O-O-O smooth! Can’t wait to get started! I was a teen-ager when that first came out! I’m a total, very late-starting novice, so I need a LOT of ‘bassic’ guidance like HOW/WHY the chords hang together – it’s just the way my mind works! [Start talking about diminished fifths and you’ve LOST me!!!!!] Ok, Ok, I CAN manage the majors on an electric or accoustic! Power to your amps!

    2. Hi Alex, Nice piece of wood you are playing on !! It amazes me how some minds think alike. I played take 5 in my blues band and played almost the exact same bass line!! The chorus was slightly different, but we had a three piece horn section : Alto Sax, Barratone Sax, & Trumbone. I had to be careful not to melodicly step on the horns. The guitarist, as a result of the horn section, played a lot of minor 9ths, and diminished them frequently, which gave me a lot of freedom to creat melodic bass lines. With that in mind, I think I am going to get a boost in my creativity and bass lines with your course. Groove on, and remember: “It’s O.K. To Funk Out With Your Junk Out”

  1. Why didn’t you this before? Great work and amazing how the lines where developed. Let us know when you are ready.

  2. Real nice Alex. Liked the occasional slides and especially the run down towards the end. Keep it up!!

    Allen (1967 Fender Precision)

    1. …ditto, I really like what you did with the improve towards the end. Simple but effective. Lets have more.

  3. I love these videos. My only down point is that we can’t download em. The computer I do most of my music stuff on (which is in the room i play bass in) is not internet ready and I’d prefer to take the video to the practice, not the other way round. Any chance of even a temporary download file for each of these lessons? or a by special request ZIP file?

Otherwise, great job, and if you need any help from any of us (“BGMGurus” or “BGMStreetForce”) let us know!!!!

Cheers again and happy new year!

    David

  4. Thats pretty cool man! Now you have to break it down for us. Oh and just a small preview of what u been working on? I can’t wait to see what you have up you sleeve for us!

  5. Alex,
Very nice. Clean, accurate and just enough flamboyance.
I got the video without any stuttering and the sound was loud enough. I could watch both hands at once. I would need some way of slowing it down, or a crib sheet to follow the actual notes played, but if lessons were delivered in this way I feel I could follow them. I am now on a broadband connection so video is possible.
All the Best for 2008 and beyond,
    /Les

  6. That’s some nice playing, and I’ve always been curious about what you look like! Sadly, I have to say that I didn’t really learn anything from the video. But keep making videos, I’m sure someone will find them very useful! 😉

  7. Thanks for the vid….it’s a good example of how I’d like to see myself playing. I changed jobs not long after I downloaded and started your program….it’s been difficult to continue the program on a regular basis….but I’m still picking away at it. I upgraded my bass. I started out on a low end 4 string but as soon as I realized that I was going to like playing bass I sold the 4 string and upgraded to an Ibanez SRX705 5 string….it’s an awesome guitar….I just need to find a way to incorporate my bass practice on a regular basis into everything else in my life. It’ll happen….I’ll find a way!! In the meantime…..stay in touch…..keep me on your mailing list and keep sending stuff as it comes up! Take care….:o) Chris Bourgeois (Shediac, New Brunswick, Canada)!!

  8. Thanks for the demonstration of Take 5. Gives me something to aim for, that’s for sure. Good job on the blog as well. Take care!

  9. Pretty bad ass! I just got the program and have barely touched on the excercises. I’ve been doing tab for a little while and not enough real practice. Last night I was messing with the groove station and could come up with nothing to any of the beats. That’s not your fault as I guess I was just having one of those nights. It’s good to have inspiration and I’m looking for it. Thanks for your help thus far. I think I need to find some people to jam with a little, maybe that would help. I don’t spend a lot of time online so off to work I go. Have a good one.

    Chris

  10. Hello Alex I enjoyed this video alot! did you every thought about doing a lesson video that goes along with your Bass secrets lessons. I really believe if you make video lesson more people would be interested. I love what u doing and cant wait for more videos

  11. Hey Alex,

That is a nice little tune, I’ve always liked it. Funny, I’ve never thought much about playing bass for it ;o))))

You do a great job! Nice blog and I’m looking forward to seeing other goodies that come up, thanks for this!!

  12. Hey blessings my friend,

This si great! Love listening to your playing. Please tell me how do I get music tracks like this to play along with and for practice.

  13. Hey Alex,
Awesome bass line, you are amazing to watch play. I can’t help but notice how effortlessly you use your picking hand. I was just curious is this accomplished by having the signal and volume jacked up. I seem to have to really work my bass to get any real response, but I am playing out of cheaper Fender practice amp (BXR fifteen). I have never experienced playing out of a real thunder set-up, but I figured some polishing on my playing would be good before putting it to huge volume. Any way thanks for the vid, like I said you are an awesome player, with tremendous skill and style.

    1. Hey Rick… thanks for the comments man and trust me I’m still working everyday on both my left and right hands. About the levels, I don’t play with mine maxed out or nothing but I have found (of course) that different axes do require differing amounts of effort… You’d hear people talk about things like the ‘attack’ of an instrument which talks about how quickly the waveform goes from silence to peak output once the string is plucked.

As a side note instruments with bolt on necks usually have a faster ‘attack’ than those with neck through builds. Just a comment – Stay up.

  14. Sup bro? 4/4 no longer challenging enough for you? Now you’ve got to go into the nether-regions of odd-time signatures? LOL.

Well done. I like the stuff you did at the end – very tasty. I’ve heard lots of renditions of Take 5 but I’ve never heard anyone approach it in the manner that you did. Nicely done.

  15. Real smooth, I liked watching you as you move through the fretboard which is where I need to challenge myself as I progress from the theme to variations. Thanks for the demonstration.
    Rafael

  16. Not bad, good song to jam to. My son plays the trumpet and maybe I can get him to play the sax part on his trumpet while I play the bass. Just need the drum track and we will be all set.

  17. Hey Bro! I can see why you are the Man…I like the sound and the riff changes…All I can say is Bad…meaning good stuff…keep up the good work..

  18. Hi
It takes forever tostart then goes for 2 secondas & nothing ! then plays again for a secone then ages befor e starting up again.. BUt you sound brilliant !!!
I have a beatle bass and really need to get a style of playing for myself…

  19. Loved it!!! Can’t wait for the berakdown.
I enjoy the smoothness of your style.
Happy new year to you and your family.
    Ken Windheim

  20. Vid good but notice distortion on audio particularly on lower notes but thats just levels (might be freq response of format?)

Otherwise lets have more ….. please sir

    1. Hey Ken, yeah i kinda noticed that after I compressed the video into FLV to upload… I’ll be doing some experimenting to find how best to mix for online compressed vids. Thanks for the feedback. (Strangely some folks are commenting that I should ‘raise the levels on the bass’ – whoa – I guess it’s all about the speakers you’re using to listen) lol.

      1. Nah Alex, The levels are loud enough. At times I felt that the bottom end of the sound was a little in the red but never the less you could still make out what you were playing. By the way nice work! Very smooth approach to that song, you made it more enjoyable from a basic bassline perspective without over doing it and keeping it in the pocket 😉

        Laters..looking 4 your breakdown!

        ~Nitemite~

  21. Like it. Looking forward to the breakdown. The manuals are fantastic to work with, they’re easy to follow and my bass playing has improved significantly since subscribing, but videos are definately a good idea as an accompaniment. To actually see the demonstrations is great because it makes it feel more like a proper tutorial. Keep them coming.

  22. sorry about the finger error’s in last message, but you get my drift hey? I live in South Africa by the way.
    Frankie

  23. Hey,

Looks good to me. I like to use my senses to learn (sight, sound, etc). Seeing the video, hearing the music, and listening to the explanation are great.
Hope you include written music (not just tab). Thanks for everything.

    Royce

  24. That was very inspiring. I have never seen a six-string bass before ( I live in a cave..) Please do post more.. I had a nice black univox 4 string ( back in the seventies ) I was first compelled to play by the late Gary Thain….

      1. Alex,
I finally got the chance to listen to the Take 5 videos ( all 3 ) and I have to say “WOW” You make this look and feel as easy as tying your shoes. I have never seen any teachings as compelling as these.. You are exactly what Bass Players need. I am hoping to be able to get your courses soon, after all you can never stop trying to improve if you really care about what your doing..
        Thanks for sharing, Stan
by the way, I am going to the link you sent, Thanks again…

      2. WOW! I’ve got a 4 string Fender bass, that”s petty cool, I”ve got a 5 string “Warrior” Bass in layaway, and now I see a 9 string Bass! Man talk about work to do! Just recently ordered your Bass Guitar Secrets package and downloaded the material from the links. Great stuff! I”m positive this is going to take my skills to new levels. I’m a drummer, been playing for years, but always loved the Bass, so now I’m seriously going for the gusto. Hope to one day be an accomplished studio bassist, and maybe so gig work also. Loved the video, hope to see more. You’ve got a student in me, I’ll be following your instructional material. great job. Be Blessed.

        e emery jr.

  25. cool! you have to do more videos.
p.s.: thank you for sending those bass tips, they’re great. and helpful. keep them coming.

  26. Hey Alex,

Will I be able to play that on my 4 string bass…
will you be chords be available for that tune..
    Thanks
    Barry

  27. Hey, that’s a good groove, and I think I could learn it. Looking forward to more instruction about it. I’ve enjoyed your emails. Thanks! Dekker

  28. Hi Alex
Really liked “Take 5”. Nice interesting bassline, not too busy and I feel it added to the original tune, which, unfortunately, I can remember being issued first time round!
Please keep doing these, they are good.

  29. hello Alex; nice to hear from you and a great song. hope some day i will be able to play like that. Can that all be played on a 4 string? I broke my hand a while back and had to lay off for a while. Just starting to get my hand to stretch out for some of the notes again. Decided to go back through the lesson’s and refresh myself. Looking forward to the upcoming lessons. thanks again Steve

  30. Hi Alex

Thanks for the video! I’m looking forward to the break-down version. The sound was a little distorted on my system perhaps that could be looked at?

    Many thanks again.

    Gary

  31. Hi! Alex this is Bob i see in your video that you play with a 6 strings bass and by the way it is very good i have a accoustic bass 4 strings i have ad it for 6 month now and cant play just does not cach it if i could play 1/8 off what you play in that video i wold be the happiest guy also i am 63 years old and dont know nothing about music but i tought i coul start someweare and most of my friends play the guitar and they have been telling me that the bass guitar wass the easyest well i dont think it is easyer ten the guitar even if i cant play the guitar i was trying this by miself and tought i wold learn and then one day get in with them and suprize them by playing the bass but i gess i was wrong Bob.

  32. That was fly! And that’s a beautiful six-string you’re playing. Do you use any effects pedals in your playing? If so, what do you use?

    Thanks! Keep the videos coming!

    1. Hey Big Mike… (hmm same name as a bro of mine who plays a ‘little’ drums, for a ‘few’ folks who’ve sold a ‘couple’ albums 🙂

Nope no effects pedals and such… I mean it’s all good (i ain’t gonna hate on nobody or nothing) but i’m kind of a purist myself. Well keep practicing and keep it grooving… Stay up my man!

  33. Great effort…love the bass…taught Accordion for 2o years grandson very gifted musician( What 19 year old isn’t)I shoot these on to him to enjoy…jim

  34. Hi Alex

    1. Hey Roger… yeah it seems like I am off the hook 😉 I’ll try to take care of myself… At least till I post a few more videos LOL — but seriously I am truly humbled and appreciative of the literal flood of comments that came in for the post… YOU GUYS TRULY ROCK!..

  35. Love videos. They help out so much. Guess I’m a visual as well as audio learner. Perhaps some solo work would be helpful. Thank you.

  36. Alex,

Cool clip, you make it look easy….. Which is why I have actually made progress in the last year on my guitar and bass guitar learnings. For the past 6 years I have been collecting cool looking classic American made guitars of all sorts, never actualy was able to play them up until a year ago. I became very inspired to succeed at playing them, and thanks to you I am pleased to say I am actually doing it 🙂 …….And, it sounds like music, even to my friends that are always willing to take a listen to my “work in progress”.

Keep up the great work and motivational attitude…. Rock On!

    Cheers,

  37. Man, that video was great!!! I was waiting for you to break it down and you did at the end! But then i realized you was teaching a lesson as well, about how to stay in the pocket! Great video, I’m looking forward to more! And whatever you are working…can’t wait until it’s here! J.

  38. Thanks Alex that was of the hook and funky
I realy like funky bass lines. And it is so helpful to see you play in the video, I think that you are on to something real good,

    PS : keep it coming

PSS: how do you set up your bass amp to get a
good sound ? What gear do you use?

  39. Man that was sweet. I’m looking forward to the day when I an able to play with ease. I’m working on it. any chance you can do some Gospal stuff also? I look forward to your new stuff.

Thanks man for your hard work. God has truly blessed you. I pray he keep you and your Family well and prosperous.

    1. Jeff many thanks for your blessings… I appreciate it and don’t take that lightly 🙂 I plan on having some ‘Gospel’ stuff in the pipeline. we’ll see how it goes. 😉

  40. Definitely post more of these videos. PLEASE. The demonstrations will be extremely insightful and I’m sure people would love the help. I’m excited to see more!

  41. Hi ALex!

Keep on post up instructional videos to us in the dark wilderness, struggling with major scales and fingers that yet isn’t in the same shape as yours. I look forward to the video where you will break down the bass lines. I’m sure I will learn some good things out of them.
    Be blessed.

    Peter from Sweden

(God created music, give God the Glory)

  42. Hey man, pretty sick video, sounded good, i dig the tone. I love the bass, the john patitucci sig. I also have that bass, ur the only other person i have seen with it, other then John P.

    keep up the good work

  43. Cool Lick…Dave Brubeck right..I liked the high neck walk downs at the end..Can’t wait for the DEATAILED VIDEO post.

    P.S.
I still go back to your BASS GUITAR SECRETS all the time to reinforce and learn better tech. and theory. Great Job Alex!!!

    Thanks Max
    Modesto, Ca.

  44. A perfect example of groove and innovation. The rif drives the song but plenty of artistic expression. When you see a player enjoying his groove, it spreads to others. Nice ax.

    1. Hi Hildegard, that’s important what you just said… Some people get into endless and bloodied comparisons (interpretted – borderline fistfights 🙂 when at the end of the day it’s about expression and enjoying your playing. I mean sure we’re *always* shooting to be better but it’s cool sometimes to exhale, relax and have some fun… Not everyday… Just sometime 🙂

  45. Hi this is Ron D from St. Louis, take five is one of my favorite songs. I enjoyed your interpetation especially the upper register fills(which is where I feel I have a kink in my armour) I have been stimulated to experiment more in this register by your demostration of how it expands the groove. I look forward to viewing your breakdown.

  46. Don’t you dare stop submitting these videos. I just love the way you loose yourself into the song. I noticed that you played several licks in different positions on the neck. This is so encouraging! I wouldn’t stand myself if I were as fluid as you are. Keep ’em coming Alex!

    Thanks,

    Rick

  47. Brubeck & Kupra would have taken notice of and applauded your rendition of one of my favorites.
GREAT JOB and can’t wait to get into your course

    1. wow… my face is turning red… (well a lighter shade of brown LOL 😉 Thanks man but I was just messing around. Glad you enjoyed it, many thanks for the comment. Be blessed man…

  48. Hi Alex,

Cool video mate! it should be good to learn when broken down. The only slight criticism I have is that I think it would have been better if played on a 4 string bass, as specially for the beginner bass players.

Look forward to seeing the follow up video.

    All the best
    Joe

  49. Alex: No web-page yet! Maybe next month?
Thanks for sharing. Demonstration video was GREAT!
As I said before, (not to repeat myself) I am almost 59 and on disability. Played upright for six years in H.S. and bass guitar in H.S. bands until 1972. Fell in love with the music and hunger causes of singer-songwriter Harry Chapin until his fatal accident. Changed to six string guitar, but not very good.
Finally downloaded all your lessons. I will place in binder and practice for as long as GOD will let me. I play in a Church suurrounding for now but I am on the lookout for a Christian Pop/Rock band. Maybe someday, GOD willing.
    Thanks for listening.
    Respectfuly,
    Nicholas Buccina

  50. Great but I have the same problem. My internet is still dialup. I can’t download any of the music on your free lessons. All I have is the tab and I don’t read music. I’m an by ear player. Until I can afford the faster internet all the music downloads is unless. Thats not good for someone that plays by ear. When I get the upgraded internet I will diffently be back and check it all out.

  51. Enjoyed the Video! Makes me want to practice. That must be the point of the exercise. Wish you every success in 2008.

  52. I just wish i could just come close to your video, Just starting out in my seventies now , like gospel and want to be able to do some B A S I C bass lines for GROUP settings ( Quartet style ) keep up the god work. Chisholm

  53. Fantastic playing, only thing i’d say is if you’re gonna break it down into lessons you could do with using a 4 string bass as most novices like myself use one. 🙂

    1. Hey Mike big thanks on the comments man!

Ok a lot of folks seem to be worried about this being transferable to a four string bass or them being able to follow it… Trust me don’t sweat it… The break down video will be slow and very up close… And believe it or not I hardly do much that can only be done on an extended range bass. I mean sure it’s a bit different but I hook you guys and goyles up 😉

      blessing bro!

  54. Hey Alex,
Keep the videos coming. I had been playing bass for about 25 years when I purchased Bass Guitar
Secrets a year and 1/2 ago. I can’t tell you how the much this has elevated my playing. I was in a rut. The videos are icing on the cake. I would love to see some soloing technique videos. Oh, nice bass. I have the 5-string version.

    1. Ron my man, big thanks for the kind words… Glad that you are seeing significant improvement in your playing! Stay cool and keep practicing man!

Oh yeah… might be confusing my ax with another… I don’t think there’s a 5 string version to it. Be safe bro and happy new year.

  55. Very nice, it’s great to see your technique. I always wonder if I have the correct technique and it feels good that I’m pretty close. I realize I’m still a beginner after playing for years after seeing you play.

    Thanks

  56. Very nice, it’s great to see your technique. I always wonder if I have the correct technique and it feels good that I’m pretty close. I realize I’m still a beginner after playing for years after seeing you play, but I know why…I must play more!

    Thanks

  57. That was pretty cool Alex. Will be waiting for the basslines dude.

This is GROOOOVYYYYYY… visual stuff always helps me more.

  58. Hi Alex,
I just signed up for your course last night and lo and behold I receive your video this morning. This is a great testimony to your being a true music lover who cares about passing on and sharing the knowledge you’ve gained along the way. Many other home study courses get their money and leave you out to dry. Keep it coming.
    Gary Flagg,

  59. Enjoyed the video. Watched it first thing this morning. Loved what you were doing in the back 1/4 of the song. Sliding up and doing some nice fills.
Having the bass volume a little bit louder would be nice…. Since I was listening to it from my computer, and the tinny, tiney speakers don’t have much base response….
Can’t wait to see more, with break downs, close ups, 4 string bass, etc….

    Thank you,
can’t wait to see what you are doing..

  60. Hey Alex. I enjoyed the video – you have a knack for making bass lines look extremely simple while fillng them with lots of interesting stuff!! I can’t wait for more of the same. I really think you are one of the best kept secrets in the bass playing community! Keep up the great work.

  61. Sick track, man. I can’t wait to learn it! Just as a pointer though, you might do well to teach new stuff on a 4 string. I’m sure that’s what most of the beginner-intermediate bass players own so you’d be appealing to a bigger crowd. Good job though!

  62. hey alex got your video today, cant wait to see the breakdown? looking foward to it, and learing it. thanks, love your coarse

  63. Hi Alex, this is great stuff! Keep the videos coming! I also think that adding video to your BGS wil make a big difference.

PS I love the BGS. I went from plucking around to playing bass in the church band and a blue grass band.

    Terry

  64. Alex it was a real pleasure watching and listening to playing a 6 string bass, what’s the make .
I’m a left hander, watching the fret movents do prove a little difficult at times when I’m watching a right hander, I have a lefty bass 4 string, I get there but a bit slower. I like your smooth relaxed playing and now I feel a bit more confident I’m starting to feel more relaxed, and not fighting the beast.
    Paul

  65. Alex my man, great stuff!!!! I have just retired and my plan was to accomplish the BASS. I have had lots of time practicing and redoing lessons not understood. To see a face on the guy and to see, hear and watch you play has inspired me. I have to admit with out playing some songs I was getting bored with the theory and started back at my old tricks…jamming to the stereo. Did that for years and still can’t play. So back to the lessons, keeping the metero ticking and look foreward to more vids
    Thank you so MUCH
    Dennis, Greewood BC, Canada

    1. Hey Dennis, thanks for the kind words man… Just to encourage you… Everyone wants to play and jamming is FUN and worthwhile. I honestly DO believe that play with friends (especially if they are better than you) or jamming with the stereo in a productive manner is an important part of your development… But be careful not to ‘slight’ theory… You see when you understand why something works you can pick up what’s really going on in more advanced playing a lot faster!

As a simple example, understanding how an arpeggio is built, can see you almost ‘predicting’ the notes used in some bass runs and licks if you see what I mean. Hope this little feedback helps… Rock on.

  67. Hi Alex,

The video is good and you have played very well.

The song has a repetitive feel and the bass part you played is too repetitive to me,
I would have varied more the bass line breaking the rhythm as you did in the end of the video.

May be the next video could be the solo on Take 5, what do you say?

Warmest Ragards and Happy New Year!!!

    Marco

  68. Alex, that’s was a nice groove and you were in the pocket. You sure made that bassline seem easy, I hope one day I will be able to play that way. Keep on GROOVING Alex, you’re great.

  69. Hey Alex. Ihave tried a lot of books, tapes video’s but I think that if you have a program that shows where to put your fingers abd break the the bass so that it is easy to read, I would be for that. By the way I love that tune and the way that you did with it great job.

  70. Very nice video. I like the way you use the I V VIII IV for the descending B part. It shows how a very simple I V VIII can be improved upon by adding the IV, and eluding to the direction of the bassline’s progression.

Very tasty and a good example of putting the lessons to work in a real environment. Even if you choose not to do a breakdown video, you can see and hear the lessons in action.

I am excited to see this new development in your lesson plans. Keep up the good work, and your course is money well spent in my book…even without the videos. But don’t stop making them, as a lot of people are inspired by visual aids.

    Thanks very much,
    Ed Fellabaum

  71. Alex — more great work from you!! It’s great to see what I will be able to do when you have the video lesson complete. Keep it up and thanks!!

  72. Hey Alex I got the site and I saw the take 5 demo but I can’t get the practice video to play. I love what you’re doing on the demo, wheres my sh*t I wanna be able to do that?
    BigDaddyDok

  73. I just ordered the lessons. I am really looking forward to some fresh instruction. I am hopeful that your lessons will bring me to a new level of bass-manship that will catapult our band into the local spotlight. I am fortunate to be with a group of musicians who want the bass rhythms to be the focal point of our music. Let’s give ’em something to be proud of!

  74. Yo Alex, that was coo man. Your style is similar or a initial mark to what I am looking for. I am learning on a 6-string and it is nice to hear someone that plays it well. Quick tip you probably already got; on the next video increase the bass and decrease the background music. Since you are the center of attention. Thanks

  75. I can’t really believe how you you have developed such a positive community and learning atmosphere in such a short time Alex, for so little outlay on our part. I’m still working away at your BGS course and using my gradual improvement to add bass backing tracks to my recordings. You really do have such a silky, smooth way of playing, which is a great incentive for me to keep up the hard work. I look forward to the breakdown of “Take 5” with interest.

  76. I love it. I just wish that I could spend about thirty minutes aday with you, maybe some of your groove style would rub off to me.

I play gospel music and like to put some reel feel in our music if you know what I mean. ( we praise the Lord with music and it is awesome!)

  77. Very smooth groove. Thank you Alex that was great, talk about inspiring! I’ve sort of been getting into a creative slump lately but your vidio was the groove blast that I needed. I’ll be going back and forth from my Fender 4 string to my Shecter 5 just to see how much of “Take 5” I can pick up before you break it down for us. Again, thank you, God bless and Happy New Year,
    Jim

  78. Really nice groove, smooth, well done. I really look forward to the teaching part of this video, with tutorial and note by note break down, etc.

    Thank you.

  79. Very Nice. Very nice indeed. Can’t wait to see the breakdown. Can’t wait to just hear a jam and lay down sweet grooves like that.

  80. Alex, I am so new to your program (a few weeks) I just watch the Video for the 3rd time. My goal is to be as good as your video shows you, A lot of the hand positions in your lessons are the same or near the same as the video, The video has help me to understand my direction, thanks and keep them coming

    1. Hey Stan, thanks. I’m glad you enjoyed the video… But just to comment on what you said… “Yes!” the hand positions (and everything I write about in Bass Guitar Secrets) are what I use when I play… Just pointing that out ’cause believe it or not some people (who don’t actually own B.G.S. themselves) think I just kinda guessed-up my home study course or better yet, maybe I don’t even play bass and somebody else wrote it… Go figure… 🙂

Anyhow stay cool man… Cya around.

  81. Alex
Nice groove on that Take 5 number. I too am looking forward to the breakdown on it as well. This was truly a good investment for me i hope other bassists will catch on to your teaching.

    Later
    Brian

  82. Great rendition, Alex. The Senator would probably love that take on his classic line.

Oh, I saw some comments about the time signature and the song is in Quintuple time. That’s why it’s called “Take Five”!

  83. Great work, I play this with my Bari Saxophone, almost want to change to the bass. I have your Bass secrets and love it. Great work, the only request I have is to see some bass clef written music combined with the TAB. It would enhance it for reading musicians. Keep it up, Happy new year

    Armando Jazzming

  84. I can’t wait to hear more. I played that clip over and over. Thanks for getting me excited to practice more.

  85. Alex,

I’ve come a long way since I first purchased your coarse. Thanks so much. You keep expanding and polishing the apple and I appreciate it. The video is great and I look forward to the followup material.

    Dan

  86. Awesome site Alex. I bookmarked it for now and will get back to it this afternoon. Can’t hardly wait to see the clip and put it to action. Later Roy

  87. Great to have a face to go with the name. I am not sure why but I had a fat, balding, white guy in my mind.

Good video and I am looking forward to the break down. As mentioned before, it would be nice if we could download the videos so we could watch and learn at our leisure.

  88. Nice work. I particularly liked the climb into the upper register. More, please!!!! Hearing grooves like this helps focus me a bit more on what I may want to try. Thanks.

  89. You had A course that you where offrening in oo7 it was a with books & cds I think It was 49 Dollars I Just Received the new Video take 5 send me Imformation on cds course Your address & Phone Number so if I like the I can pay for it lookig foring hearing from you. Rob

  90. I wanna be just like you when i grow up. I really like the little slide you did toward the end. love the vedio

  91. Very Cool Alex!
    As always groovy.
I wish it was me playing like that, keep up the good work.
    And please keep it coming

  92. Nice work , loved the video and cannot wait for the break down.Thought the first vid was good but this one is even better.
    Keep in the groove……

  93. looks I’m the only female with a comment….I love ur skills ….tryin to get mine up…..u know it always looks good with a pretty girl behind the bass….who can play!!

  94. nice groove, gotta love the range you get with the 6-string. But must of the beginners i agree wont (or really shouldn’t) have a 6-string bass. Also when you do a break down of the bass line, why don’t you simply go over the scales and triads used in making it instead of just going note by note. I’ve found that once students get the different scale patterns down they’re much more free to come up with their own bass lines grooves. yup, but i do like what you’re doing here for younger (and older) bassists. Keep it up.

  95. I think I remember this song being done by Herbie Hancock years ago and yes nicely done if a little repetitive in places but then thats a bass players job I reckon 🙂
I notice you play at the bottom end a lot and really only go into the higher register around the middle of the tune.
As someone else said, most of us use 4-string basses because of preference or lack of finance so I’d also lke to see this tune done on a 4-string.
I have a ’62 Precision meself and wouldn’t sell or trade it for anything in the world.
Having said all this 🙂 Keep up the good work and I’ll keep coming back to see what else you come up with.
And by the way Alex 🙂 Happy New Year mate I hope 2008 is a good one for you and your family.
    Yours sincerely T. Brown

  96. You are a skilled player! Haven’t seen many of your videos. The ones I have seen are simplified vamp arrangements over primarily one chord, which I like, but I would enjoy seeing how you improvise and come up with a bassline and fills over chord progressions that change quicker. Maybe along the lines of a pop song that has movements where the chord progression is changing every two to four beats.

Having said that, you are tons ahead of me. That’s why I see your stuff!

  97. Hi Alex,

Thanks for the video…very impressive. Really look forward to the ‘details’. As a leftie, it does take a little longer to transpose. However, have made significant advances since purchasing your program a year ago. Happy New Year from Australia.

    Brian.

  98. I thoght the video was great. I look forward to more that break it down. Keep it up! I learn from and enjoy everything that you send my way. I just wish I was independently wealthy, and all I would have to do was learn and play . . . LOL

  99. Loved the playing. good imagination on how to play something simple and make it interesting.
I would be nice to hear you play a bass solo on this number. Take Five is one of my favourite tunes.

  100. Thanks Alex – great sound. Would it be possible to superimpose an image over the top of the video showing the chord you are playing. I could then study the options you are following in the chord progression.
cheers ….Owen – Perth, Western Australia

  101. Great playing but it would make learning easier if you were playing a 4 string bass like most of us.

  102. Hi Alex,
Your sound is fantastic. I loved the video. How do you make your bass sound like that? Are you using an effects box? The sound is so smooth.

    Happy New Year Alex
    Keep up the awesome work…

    Erskine Gordon
    Memphis, Tn.

    1. Hi Erskine, thanks for the kind words… About the ‘sound’ — nope… no effects box or anything. That’s Bass + Planet Wave cable only. The bass is the John Patitucci signature model from yamaha… Do a search on google for Yamaha TRBJP. Stay cool man.

  103. Hey Alex,
It’s as smooth as I imagined you’d play!!! Looking forward to what’s next! Great job on everything!

  104. Alex,
    YOu are the MAN.
I love the CGX system and your improvisational skills. Keep it Up .God bless us all in 2008

    Much Respect and Love

    POpaTrico

  105. Alex thanks to you I am progressing on the bass. HAPPY NEW YEAR. Think it is a great idea to have videos for to see. Looks as if you will be pretty busy just reading all the responses to take 5. Again I say thanks.
    David

  106. That was very smooth. I purchased a 4 string BC Rich
and recently purchased a 5 string Fullerton. The Fullerton is much lighter than BC Rich, What would be a good Bass for beginners.

Keep up the good work and Thanks for the info.

  107. Nice bass playing Alex

I’m a guitar player but just spent $2500.00 on a ampeg and 4 string Fender P bass rig. Maybe a bass player will come over a we can jam.

I plan on messing around with the bass myself but really enjoy the guitar more and will be giving my time to that.

However bass was my first desire as a kid and I would spend more time playing bass if it comes easy. I hope your free stuff will encourage me to pick up the bass more.

  108. Hi liked what I saw and heard but I’m still on dailUp so it was a bit staggered. May go to broadband this year or what passes for broadband in NZ.

  109. Alex (NO NEED TO POST):

Very nice, but I don’t think I could learn it by repeated play. My problem is time. I actually would like to learn to play bass so I could join the family bands when they get together, but I would have to learn very slowly a few bars at a time repeated until I got the whole tune.

I am not sure if this reflects your training approach or not? I know NOTHING about playing guitar or the bass but really would love to play.

  110. Hi,
not sure how you got my email but that’s cool (maybe from years ago). Glad I got it anyway, coz I love bass and would love to know how to play..but zero time…tsk..tsk.
I’m just happy to watch and listen. How did u make that vid, most vids are crappy quality but yours was good to watch and good sound.

    Good luck

  111. Alex that was cool; very much at ease, effortless bass playing at its best, and a great performance. The video clip looks and sounds superb, without cutting in and out all the time, superb. I love the six string Bass, I recently upgraded to a five string Bass after playing a four string for many years and it has opened up an amazing new world of playing for me. Thanks very much for this gift, I look forward to the Bass line break down of how you achieve this ………………

  112. Akex great work yes I agree with some of the comments please slow it down and show the notes that you are playing

  113. I liked the vid, hope to see more and hopefully some slow breakdowns of what you’re actually doin’… also, i’d like to see a 4 string bass in the vids or no more than a 5 string just so it’s easier to follow.

  114. Thats a BLESSING to be able to play like that. God that’s the skills I want. What must I do to get that style of playing.

  115. Cool Stuff Alex – I played this song in a Jazz group when I was at school 25 years ago now. It was by Dave Brubeck Five as I recall. Now I can learn it all over again. Thanks 🙂

  116. Alex
I really appreciate your talent and material. Superbly done. I will be waiting to get transcription, so I can produce some of of your sounds. God Bless

  117. Alex
Can you also include the last video you did on this blog. the one of Pick up the Pieces. Thanks bro you are really an inspiration. Even as an older bassist I still have to remind my fellow younger band members its about the groove. You are truly one who grooves with that bass. also what brand bass do you play I cant tell what type it is.

    Thanks
    Brian

    1. Hey Brian, sure thing… I already plan to add it to the blog soon as I post the other parts to this one… And about the bass it’s a Yamaha TRB – John Patitucci signature model. Stay cool man…

  118. Nice playing Alex! I am a visual learner, so anything that you put to video will be fine by me. I also want to comment how effortless your right hand technique looks. I had the great fortune to catch Nathan East in a show up here in Canada, and I must say his technique looks as effortless as yours. Awesome job!

    K.Stewart
    Saskatoon,Sk, Canada

  119. Thanks Alex. I know you stress ear training, but for a raw beginner, visual aid will be a great addition. Right now, having a bass amp is getting me into jam sessions rather than my ability to play with a seasoned band. lol But any way to get live experience is good for now. Keep teaching, and I will keep learning.

    1. Hi Tommy, thanks for commenting to the blog but just to be clear for anyone reading… I’m not wholly sure what you meant when you said that I ‘stress ear learning’… But for anyone reading what I think Tommy is saying is that I do find it important for a musician to have a good ear… I do NOT however advocate ignoring theory… In my mind both are tools for making great music. 🙂 Just wanted to put that out there…

  120. Alex,

What can I say…..SWEEEET! I would be glad to see more videos. Love the improv done on the end! Keep em comming……thanks and God Bless!

  121. Hi Alex,
Great job on Take 5! I bought the LP way back in the early 60s. It was always one of my favorite songs. Where’s Paul Desmond when you need him? Looking forward to this secret project you’re working on. Taking your course has sure been fun.

  122. Basslines like that are the reason I have been trying to learn to play the bass for 20 years!
You really do give us a lot.
    Thanks

  123. Hi Alex,

Keep up the good work. I will soon get my bass guitar. Still haven’t chosen one yet. 5-string for sure, eventually 6-string. Regarding your course BGS-CG-X system I would prefer buying the hole kit then having to download. If there’s a way to do so please let me know.

    Happy New Year.

    P.S. I’m just a beginner.

  124. Man ! thatn was sweet that honey , i’m learning bass but, would love acompany you on the skins, you’re my mad and, i’m learning alot. Groove on bro. Groove on. Keep the videos coming. Your lessons are wonderful and , easy. thanks u da man

  125. Alex,
Very inspirational to see the various bass lines you’ve created along the same repeating pattern.
I can understand how others who play a 4 string might find it difficult to translate a 6 string performance. I enjoy seeing the low B & high C string incorporated in your playing. I know your follow-up will be great based on your earlier video demonstration of the Average White Band tune. You’re definately appreciated out here! Here’s to a great 2008 & God Bless you and your efforts!

  126. very cool looking forward to the breakdown, thanx 4 all the great info. also, love the idea of world domination keep us informed

  127. REAL NICE WORK I PLAY 6 STRING MY PLAYING STILE IS REAL CLOSE TO YOURS,CLOSE UP VIDEO WOULD BE NICE BUT ITS ALL IN THE EAR I LIKE IT MAN SHOW OFF.

  128. Alex,

This is exactly what I need. Looking forward to breaking your moves down slowly so I can practice the right way. Thanks!

  129. One of my all-time favorite tunes. I actually had the privilege of seeing Brubeck play it in person.

Anyhow, how about just some simple tab charts on a few of the main passages and then I can at least try to improvise from there. It’s too hard to pick out the notes at that speed and frame size, not to mention the 6-string throws me off.

Thanks though. I always like watching people play. Just a little instruction would be nice with it.

  130. Too too cool. looking forward to the detailed video … and lay off the red meat and citrus drinks … atleast until I have learned to play like that … *evil grin*

    CFD

  131. Alex, Very cool, I am very looking forward to the breakdown and agree that using a 4 string would help beginners alot Keep this stuff coming. Looks like your already making 2008 great for alot of us fellow Bassmates THANKS!

  132. Hey Alex,

real nice job, i like the style of bass you play. you know, how your fingers dont really seem to be moving that much but you still manage to make alot of notes. Well, anyways i just wanted to say that if you could make like a bass lesson and then have a video at the end that would make it really good to practice on and stuff.

    thanks,

    marck

  133. Great tune, real smooth groove, but the bass towards the middle of the video sounded a little muddy. Perhaps too much movement on the real low end. Otherwise, great stuff! The riff definitely grabs and holds the listener. I can’t wait for you to break it down for us.

  134. Well I’m Impressed. You have a good fluid motion and that 6- string is NASSTAY! I really wished I would have stuck with playing when I was younger. I’m now 49 and taking up where I left off 30 years ago is a challange to say the least. But I’m determined to get my rythem back. I do have a 5-string- a Schecter, but I like the sound of my Fender P-bass better. Too bad they don’t make 5 & 6 strings. Oh yeah I’m a lefty!

  135. Hi Alex That’s a great number and I usually play along to Hank Marvin’s version of it. The way you have played it, putting all the extra fills and octaves in just puts it into a new dimension. Great stuff. I’m wondering how I would go with my 4 string Jazz Bass. The 6 string sounds great and I guess would offer that little “extra”.

  136. Alex,

You’re awesome. I’ve been enjoying your e-mail lessons, and I’ll be getting into your full program soon.
    Thank You!

  137. Well, I like the video and I think that it is neat that you are taking the time to develop a comprhensive bass learning system. My only thing is it would be hugely better if you incorporated dvd lessons to would go along with what is in the book. Check out Learn and Master the Guitar. I know it is about playing the guitar, but the way his teaching materials are is awsome. It has dvd’s, jam track cd’s, and a leason book. If you could do something comparable to that, then I would be extremely interested. Like most people I cannot just learn strictly from a book. I think you have a great idea, but I think there are some things you could do to improve your system to make it more user friendly.

    1. Hey thanks thanks for the comments but don’t worry… I’m not saying specifically yet, but the ‘2008 evil scheme’ involves DVDs… 🙂 Stay cool man. Laterz

  138. It is great to see the man who taught me to groove practicing what he preaches. It was a delight to watch this and I look forward to the breakdown. You have a magical way of presenting and teaching that gives an understanding and freedom to playing, empowering us bass players. Its a welcome change to those countless ‘copy’ or ‘lick’ based teachers/lessons. I cant wait to see more of whats installed. My only suggestion would be in support of the other comments relating to your bass. Using a 4 string bass would be my recommendation.

  139. Very impressive. I will now continue to learn and get all your stuff to help me. Great job and thank you for keeping in there with me.

  140. Thanks Alex, You have once again done a super vid. I look forward to hearing from you. I feel that my mastering the bass or at least building my confidence is because of your course. Please help me to download the BGs system and CG-X or tell me where to obtain it. Keep up the good work, we need you

  141. Run of video was smooth did have a few load spots. I run DSL good sound and looks like it will work well once the break down and music (tab and notation is added.)

I will keep my eyes on this site.

  142. Nicely done! Looking forward to the next instalment. I do have to agree with ‘Marcelo’- its going to be a pain in the hole for me to do that on my 4 string Epiphone Thunderbird! Keep up the good work. Im really enjoying the bass more and more (been a rhythm guitarist for many the year and thrying to find a bassist for the band in this neck of the woods is Not easy!- so naturally i took to playing the core riff and root notes… but not now!)

  143. Hi Alex
Geat video, loved watching the ease at which you play. I am only a basic beginner and would love to play even a fraction as good as yourself.
    Regards
    Steve

  144. hi Alex,
you’re extremely talented and your video is highly
motivating, (& at the same time frustrating)
i practice every day since i started learning 3 yrs. ago to teach myself to play 4 string using your course. I’m 75 so I’ll never approach 1/4 of your
talent, but you got me going good enough to play in a couple of volunteer country bands. the video stuff is going to be well received by all levels of
“the instrument” players. THANX, charlie brown.

  145. Hey Alex,

Best wishes to you and yours for 2008. thanks for the heads up on the new website and thanks for the video. Do like the slides in particular. However a 6 string bass looks quite daunting for a novice like myself. It’s like watching someone in a brand new stunning Ferrari and bombing in ’round the track and then be asked: now you do that! So maybe have two versions, beginner and bass-ace!

Either way, I still need to start the program, have just started a new job so time time time. But the new webside does help as motivation.

    PS
Obviously you now know my two passions, Cars and Bass.

    Bertil
    Amsterdam

  146. Great, ironically I have just started to work on that song. You provided some ideals by me listening to you. Just need some notes to make it work for me.

  147. I especially liked the riff in the last 2 seconds.

I agree with previous posts about using a 4 string for the demo. Most of us use a 4 string, so it would be helpful to see demos on a 4 string.

I just started your BGS course about 2 weeks ago and I’m already improving. Thanks for your great work, Alex.

  148. Alex,
Happy new year. Great work. I’ll probably never get to that level of playing but its fun trying. Thanks ,Fred

  149. You are a very talented young man. What I really admire about your style is that you seem to keep it beautiful but simple. Great for beginners like myself. My emphasis are on gospel and jazz. Do you have lessons for sale on those? Hope to hear from soon. Thanks for contacting me.

  150. THANKS ALEX

Had gotten all excited about the Avearge White Band video, and I must say, working with it quite well per your instructions….can’t get any better than that.

Now for the Take 5……Send the instructions ASAP.
Thank you Alex for what you do.

  151. Thanks for the video, I just started bass guitar lessons in June 2007 and now I’m at the point of trying to learn how to fill in and develop my on playing style without copying someone elses playing style. I think the video and the break downs will help me.

    Thanks again

  152. My computer crashed an took all of my files with it. I would like to replace the earlier lessons if at all possible. I really like your work. Talks to me from deep down.

  153. Alex, Happy New Year–

Great goove going & a great idea. I enjoyed the video lesson you sent last fall. I like the structure of first playing it through; second, breaking it down section by section; & finally recapping after showing what you have done at a slower speed & putting it all together. A truely great idea.

Keep them coming, we appreciate these. John

  154. You asked for comments…..Your poise and posture on the video show more than all the stuff you have sent me. I’m not a subscriber, but I am a bass player, both full time and professionally. It shows the three most important aspects of learning to play bass.
    #1 Learn and practice scales
    #2 Learn fretboard positions
#3 Tone and volume are in your fingers,…..not your knobs
For students…..Respect the bass for it’s role and it gets easier.
Your course does look good and I do recommend it to beginning bass players.

  155. Sweet jam…I do enjoy your videos. Its nice some times to be able to learn by example. Once you have a basic idea of chords and scales its nice to see how others put them into practice. The only thing I would ask is if you could post a link to the tabs and/or chords along with the video. Keep up the awesome work though, I know Ive learned a lot from you and I do appreciate it.

  156. Nice, Alex! Good playind, good tune. Alot of beginners and intermediate players might not attempt that time signiture, but that ain’t the point! Looking foward to the breakdown of the techniques. Thanks!

P.S. You made that dude sound like a fretless! Kool!

  157. yes ! yes ! yes ! yes ! yes ! smooth baby a break down would help but i can follow the video pretty accuratly. one can follow you easily by the way you directly and clearly attack each string, with no other non-essencial fingers in the way. i”m one that uses teaching media alot. its almost cheating. then when you get to stand up in front of a crowd boom, boom boooomin’ away accuratly, the high then greatly overwhelms the guilt. thanks for the great lessons keep ’em comin’.

  158. HI! I am new to this stuff but I jumped in none the less! I am a full time singer and I have always wanted to play the bass guitar. I was so excited about the fact that I was actually understanding everything and then I ran into a little snag. Chapter 14 “Fret Mastery”. I memorized the intervals from chapter 13 but something tells me that I should have done something more before moving on. Is there anything else I can do in Chapter 13 that will make Chapter 14 a little clearer?!?! Sory to disturb. 🙁 I just don’t want to get discouraged, so if there is anything you can suggest, it would be truly appreciated!

  159. This is great. I am still in my pre-k / beggining stage and I’am looking for your next release for this awsome skill. Thanks for the 411

  160. Alex,

I really liked the video. I have been playing for 4 years now and your video
shows how far I have to go. I seldom get to see someone of your ability
play so thanks for doing the video.

  161. Hey Alex that was so cool and very smooth. I have a problem using my pinkie finger to do the chords, I have been playing bass for 25 years and have never been able to get that finger to work for me. Do you think I’ll have problems working out your moves ? Have a great new year. Looking forward to more videos and lessons.

  162. Well, Alex, you’ve done it again! One thing is certain, you show a love for your instrument and the music. I have been enjoying your work now and must now take the time necessary to learn from your mastery. Thanks for the instruction and encouragement.

    KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!!

  163. love, love the video. Can’t wait to see the close-ups. I’m just beginning, so please do some videos with a four string. Thank GOD for blessing you to spread and share your talent.

  164. Great to hear from you again. Looks like you have LOTS of POSITIVE responses to the video and new blog site. Very nice. You are ALRIGHT! Look forward to hearing and seeing more. Your course has helped me so much so far. Keep it up!

  165. Love it, smooth and easy to listen to. Can’t wait for the breakdown. Can you tell me what bass and amp you are using please? Many thanks. Mike, New Zealand.

  166. Excellent mate!

But will I need a six string ‘cos I can’t afford (unless I get a trip to USA!!). I remember a fantastic night in the 60’s when Dave Brubeck & Co performed at a venue south of London – I’m not a jazz fan but it blew me away. The rhythm section of Eugene Wright & Joe Morello were simply amazing – I’m gonna dig out my vinyl of DB @ Carnegie Hall.

By the way Jethro Tull’s ‘Living in the Past’ is the same time signature
Bring it on Alex – leave the red meat brother and eat the fruit!!!!!!

    Best wishes
    Merv

  167. Looks great Alex, some more of that would be brill.
Really like the sound of the detailed videos, will be interesting to see how it works out.

  168. Alex, that’s just what I need. As I get older I find I’m becoming a visual learner. This video delivery approach will help me. Keep them coming.

  169. Alex,

Thanks for the video. I am looking forward to the breakdown and more great stuff from you. Thanks for your help and encouragement.

  170. Hi Alex,
Thanks for the continued work on teaching the Bass. I like learning from videos, I can see how you move on the fretboard. God Bless.
    Rick.

  171. it sounds like an ordinary song but when you put twick on your baseline it is sounds great. it seems so easy doing it using a 6-string bass guitar. i hope i can get a copy and try to practice it also.

  172. Nice video clip. Thank you for the hard work and dedication. Looking forward to expand on it. Bass Guitar Secrets – highly recommended.

  173. Alex, Thanks a ton man! I’ve played drums for 20 years,my oldest son wanted to be a drummer so i decided to try and learn something new? well everybody’s a guitar player and i am more into the thump. Late august,07 i bought me a bass. that night i got on-line to search for some help.and who did i find? you man, i’m now in my 4th month and i’m understanding you and can actually play the darn thang.thanks ,keep on thumpin’ and groovin’ brother and i’ll try to keep up! May God Truely Bless You!

  174. look forward to being like Alex, I’ve got a broken left arm and have lost much practice to that.alex i’l really have to talk to you on phone pls.

  175. Alex,

Another fine example showing that you don’t have to restrict bass lines to just roots & fifths. As long as you have the basic motivic composite nailed, you can be free to play more linearly adding yet another dimension to your lines. Your concepts and the way you communicate them are wonderful!

    Thanks!

  176. Very cool, the higher runs are a great highlight. Man you HAVE TO get the breakdown out soon…My fingers are itching!

  177. Wow dude i never knew you were this good. I wish i’d paid more attention to those emails. The tone you got on that video is pretty damn cool, an thats a really cool developmented bassline. A stroke of genius some might say. And how do u get those backing tracks? i could do with some myself. 😛 Keep me updated on any new stuff.
    Much Love

  178. Oooooo that’s GOOOOD!!

Ok, so now I’ve chopped up my bass & thought about taking up the comb & paper!!! – but seriously, excellent start – look forward very much to the full offerings – always been a fan of LOOK & learn.

    Nice “six” by the way,

Best Regards – “We’re not worthy!!”

  179. Watching a master demonstrate an instrument is priceless. You make it look so smooth and easy. Look forward to the breakdown video.

  180. Awesome Alex – Keep it up – Can’t wait for more!! A note breakdown etc would be really helpful. Cheers
    Gerry

  181. Great to actually see you and watch you play… my worship team would drop me in a second if you ever stopped by the church… I definitely liked the video format– combine it with the above suggestions and you should be able to retire soon! Thanks for keeping everything affordable and encouraging others in your responses. You are definitely the man, and I’ll continue to tell others about BassGuitarSecrets!

  182. Awesome, I must admit you are truly smoothe with your skills! I hope you don’t mind if I make you my mentor. After viewing your FIRST VIDEO, it has just rejuvenated me to begin my practice again. I have no choice but to practice and practice and practice more so that I can be a TRUE BASS PLAYER like you!

THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO!

  183. AWESOME, if this is what I will get to sound like after I complete any of your lessons, then shame on me for failing to keep plugging away. You have definitely lit a fire under my foot to get started again!

    GREAT!

  184. thank you alex for writting such an easy to follow and interesting learning guide, it has helped me so much. As i am not usually one for reading text books i find it hard to learn by myself but yours has been a breeze 🙂 !
i cant wait to learn more!
    thanks again,
    nadia

  185. Fantastic job, I hope this will be a regular feature, this is just what we need to see and hear at the same time.
    Keep up the good work

  186. That was feckin cool man, Its a wee bit chilly here in Edinburgh so i keep having to make sure my fingers dont seize up. Do you perchance – oh wonderful bass chapppie – know of any exercises that are handy when your just out and about, bereft of the old bass? I try one, just thumb, index, thumb middle, thumb ring, etc, but people keep a staring as if im quick draw McGraw. Do you know any others? Excellent tutoring, keep it up. All the best.

  187. Great stuff Alex ! Watching your video inspired me to dust off my old bass and start playing again.Maybe someday I’ll get close to your level of playing.

  188. Great Alex, I would like to see you play that on a 4 string. You make the 6 string look so easy. I can play a 5, but a 6, the strings are a little too close and what a wide neck. But I would love to learn the six string bass.

  189. Hi there Alex. Excellent stuff and far more useful than written instruction. The sound wasn’t great on my PC, but I’ll sort that in anticipation of the breakdown. Great work and keep the videos coming. It’s so much easier to pick out what you are doing when you can see it being played in the flesh!

    Kindest Regards

    Graham

  190. Thanks for the new teaser, Alex. Still workin’ on your “Av Whte Band/Pk up the pcs” vid. I really appreciate the visual aid as I fumble along towards perfection.
    Two things:
    1) How can I get my pickin’ fingers to relax like yours? (I play a Carvin LB75P and a BB75PF, so my reach isn’t even as far as your 6, but my fingers tighten up when I play fast and this only slows me down)
    2) The low end sound on ur vid came thru w/distortion. I have a Bose set up for my computer so I don’t think it’s on this end.
Please keep up the video work, my brother. I pray you’ll have a Blessed 2008.
    Blessings on your house,
    Mark

    1. Mark thanks for the kind words and about the sound that happened when we compressed it down to FLV format for online viewing… Still tweaking how to mix for better sound with online videos. Stay cool man and stay blessed uself 🙂

  191. Nice tune…always loved that song and cannot wait until I am able to play it. Alex I am a “bass virgin”. I just purchased your program and started playing recently. I have been working on the program for an hour every day and have made decent progress. Can you tell me if an hour a day is enough, and how far along I should be in say…2 months? Thanks!

  192. great job Alex,i have enjoyed the course over the last year and have taken advantage of all it has to offer.I truly have become a better player for it but at times have trouble keeping myself motivated.will keep up the fight.

    Jeremy

  193. Alex, happy new year to you & your family & company i’ve gotten started for the second time andi’am truly greatful for your course, you’re a very talented musician and teacher which i believe is godly. I’am a late beginner @ 52yrs of age but i still enjoy learning no matter who’s teaching and not many can teach.continue in your endeavor and your sure to have my support i love seeing younger people achieveing their goals in life. I’ll be listening for more;thumbs up for alex and his crew !!!!!

  194. Dude! Man you are smooth! I like the way you formulate your runs! Looking forward to more vids! Peace and Be Blessed!!!!

    Al

  195. Hey Alex! Nice stuff, man! I really enjoyed the video and have already gone back to watch it a couple more times. It was great to actually see your playing techniques at work and I really look forward to the details you’ll be posting as a follow-up.

I ended up watching this video the first time on a Saturday night, which happened to be the night before I was playing for 4 services at church the next morning. The video really inspired me and I ended up totally going for it in ways I might normally hold back. I found myself going up into the high registers more just to break things up a bit. Several times I noticed people in the congregation watching me and my wife (who was on keys) said that there was one guy whose stare was just locked on me. Not that I want to be the focus or anything, but thanks for the inspiration. I felt like that inspiration really pushed me to give more!

Thanks again and keep them coming!

  196. Just signed up for your course last week and already I have seen vast improvements compared to the six months since I started teaching myself bass.
Had a bit of a problem with the video – my fault entirely – but your live help sorted it quickly.
Alex your a star and I look forward to more stuff like this

  197. great job.send me more it makes it easier with video help.i’m a late bloomer and older than most beginners this is just what i needed.the more detail the better.thx rock on

  198. Absolutely amazing! I’m one of those guys who “played” in a band in the ’60s and still have my ’66 Hofner Beatle bass. After decades of leaving my bass in the back of a closet, last year I sat in with some guys I’ve been around all my life (and who still play very well) and realized how little I really know. Please, please, keep the info coming and the videos as well. They’re an inspiration and a welcome shove towards getting back to things. Thanks from Vancouver Island, Canada!

  199. Hey Alex,Thanks so very much for including me in your mailing list.Man you are way cool, and that grooove is really there. And if you take the time to read all of these comments it may be forever before we see any tab on this.thanks again, for working so hard to keep the beat strong!!!!!!rv

  200. Hi Alex.
Great sound, one of my favourite Brubeck tracks. Played this many years with my Band but not quite so groovy – the bass was just part of the rhymn section.

I would like to know what 6 string Bass and Amp you used.

    Keep the good work up.

  201. Hey Alex,
Nice vid,,,sweet axe….I’m sure the novice to intermediates will groove on the slowed down version so they can enjoy the mild intricacies of the time signature.
Also wanted to say…nice take on a classic tune!!!!
    Keep thumpin..
    Mike

  202. Sooooo Smooth! With playing like that it’s awesome to see and hear. I would love to see you play live. Keep the love coming.

  203. I loved the video, can’t wait to see more. I’d like to see some mp3’s of you playing that I could load into my player and saturate my environment with the kind of sounds that I want to be playing. Then you could break them all down for us to learn. Is that asking too much? oh, yea… I too would prefer to see you playing on a 4 string so that it is easier to imagine that it is me playing. thanks, i’m looking forward to each lesson I read from you.
    Edward

  204. Hi Alex,

Very nice, you makin it look easy! I’ll be diving into your course soon I hope.
    Keep it up! Thanks

    Ricky

  205. Alex, Thanks. Defiantly the way to go, look forward to seeing more, I personally will find it very helpful to visually see what your doing. Maureen

  206. Hi Alex

Great vid can I also say I enrolled on your course probably 12 months ago…….. fully expecting the promise of continued support and blogs, vids etc to be all hot air! and to disappear with my money over the horizon.
But man you proved me WRONG your still here teachin and guiding me as promised?

Thanks man I really have improved although I dont have the time to do all the on line exercises and stuff but the tools you have supplied are great. and this is just one more of them. Thanks for stickin around and look forward to the break down.

    Stay safe Steve

  207. Hey “man”,

That was great I am a beginner, and watching you makes me want to practice, practice, and practice. You made that look very easy.

I purchased the grove station package and I have started practicing on that.

Well I’ll close by saying thanks and I’ll be waiting for more lessons.

    Eric B.

  208. That was excellent, thanks for the video and including me on your list. I think I will get your course now.

    John

  209. G’day Alex’

Nice playing, you have a nice touch. This video/blog will complement your course.

I look forward to further additions from you.

    Bill,

    Melbourne, Australia.

  210. Hey Alex.

I cant say how excited i am by all this and can’t wait to get your course! There is so much Love here too! So far brilliant and amazing. Thank you. :o)

    Peace & Love
    Briony (England)

  211. Alex,
The video is monster!!! I love your style and sound.
I want to be like you when I grow up..(smile)
I am looking forward to more from you!
Thank you for sharing your musical talent and knowledge.
It is evident from reading some of the posted comments that you are
an inspiration to many of us to continue our quest to become better
    musicians and bass players.

    Thank You,

    Aaron

  212. liked the video very much, liked the music, I realy like the blues and that had kind of jazzy-blues sound to it. Any chance of tabs comming out with this, so could play along. recorded it over to realplayer, so would be nice to sit back and watch and play along. I”m a slow learner so would probably be sitting there for some time. thanks for your time and expertise…..

  213. Hi Alex,
I was bought a bass for Xmas and Lucky me!! Unfortunatly I am a complete novice! I’ve been checking out tabs of Mani( stone Roses /Primal Scream), mainly because he’s from my home town, I can now play along to Waterfall! but I’ve also been trying tabs from others, you know, simple tunes and melodies. But I know I need guidance, being the wrong side of 30 I’m pretty sure it’s gonna be a long haul for me.
I’ve signed to a few sites like yours but you pull me in man, I’m really getting into your groove . I will be buying your course, but not till the end of the month, you know how it is with spare cash this time of year. So, please keep your offer open till then ,I beg you!!!
So, now you know I can read and play simple tabs, my age , and also that my Bass is obviously a beginners bass. Do you still feel confident I will be able to groove like the best of em within 6 months?
A happy new Year to you sir, and congratulations on this site, it feels very promising.

  214. Hey Alex,

I just bought your complete Bass Guitar Secrets lessons and it’s best bass lessons I’ve ever bought!

Do you think you could make some videos and lessons on Congolese music? Personally, I think it’s best music in the world ! I would also very much appreciate it if you could add some of these rhythms to your Jam Box and Groove Station.

    Some examples are that:
    – Wenge Musica Maison Mere (Group Name) – Soloa bien (Song) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bf2Sgq_a-4Q
    – Wenge Musica Maison Mere – Kalayi Boeing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxi5KDMKGNM
    – Koffi Olomide – Loi http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQdh3DjxOS4
    – Werrason (leader of Wenge Musica Maison Mere) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJ8yvR0eiIo

  215. Hi Alex,
I’m a total, late-starting novice, so your ‘bass-ic’ guidance like the intervals, the degrees and the modes are confusing me still but I’m working on it ….. I figure if I keep chipping away at the stone I’ll get to the art of it all,, eventually.-
I thought the bass would be easy to learn–hahahahah— I did want to say that I really appreciate that you are for real,, and that you offer a lot ,,,even after you got my money,,,,you really do care don’t you. So thank you for frustrating me and trying to make me better. Rick.

  216. Awesome! An excellent example, it displayed where i passionatley will love to be, the video is up there. Inspiring.Thanks. One Love

  217. Alex, I just bought the course and havent gotten into it much but I do enjoy the bass and the rich tones it produces. Cant wait to be able to play like you. Great Job!!!! Keep it up.

  218. OH! MY GOSH,HOW SMOOTH THAT WAS.HOW I WISH I COULD PLAY IT LIKE U’RE DOING.THAT WAS REALLY FANTASTIC.REALLY WISH I COULD LEARN FORM U.GOD BLESS YOU FOR THIS.

  219. ALEX…. I am chomping at the bit to get every bit of knowledge you can pass along to us aspiring bassists. Your stuff is ALWAYS enlightening as well as INSPIERING!!! Keep it up man! I am looking forward to seeing what else you have in store for us as well as your plans for world domination. It’s going to be a great year….MUCH RESPECT….PEACE!!!

  220. Hi Alex, Wow just to see you move along with ease would take me a long time to put take 5 together. Thanks for the vedio and keep sending me stuff. God Bless

  221. Thank you Alex for doing this. I have never been satisfied playing the part I came up with on Take 5. Now I can make the song move forward more with this rendition. best -Bozz on Bass

  222. i can dig this smooth line i want the lessons but i dont have a credit card can you send me info on mail order. right on keep up the good work, and remember don’t fake the funk,or your nose will surely grow!

  223. AWESOME!!! Alex you are the man. I am a beginner I think I just found my inspiration. I am going to purchase this system. God Bless.

  224. Wow!!! Your groove is unreal! I am thinking about getting your system, but I was curious if you might have a non-down loadable study course? I dont have a home computer tol download your software. Thanks!
P.S. Keep those tips of yours coming…. I cant get enough of them!!

  225. Oh my GOD!! Your amazin’ man! That was really really really awesome. I didn’t get a chance to comment on your last video, but that one was amazing too, especially the way you explained it. I was able to learn it in about an hour or so. That’s a bit fast I know, but I have a lot of music background, and near perfect pitch and all that, but I have a long way to go until I’m as good as you. OH! I had a dream about the Fabled Nine Stringer! That’s how you know I’m a bass case lol I was rippin on it, but I didn’t know that they existed until a year ago. I really want one, but I haven’t even picked up a 6’er yet. lol Anyway! Enough of me rambling on. Great Work! Please post more!
    Daniel J. =)

  226. First time visitor , life time fan.. been fooling with the bass for years , after visiting this site I’m ready to get serious. Looking forward to whats to come ,and you will be hearing from me.. Thanks for re igniting the passion Alex…Paul

  227. Alex,
I really enjoyed your video. You are definitely the man. I hope you make some more in other gentries of music. Rock, country and so on. I know that costs money to make and I for one will be the first to buy. I’m retired from the music business but in the last 60 years I’ve watched a bunch of bass players and you certainly rank right up there with the best. Hope to hear from you soon with your new project.
    Regards. Harley

  228. Hi Alex,
Man I like the video so please don’t stop, keep them coming! More importantly, don’t forget to share the breakdowns!
On another note, I must admit I was a bit of a skeptic when it came to investing in your program. I’m now working on the exercizes and let me tell you THEY WORK!!! I understand the key to progressing is consistency and practice. I can hardly wait ’til I progress to playing my six string the way you play yours. By the way, how do I incorporate the fingering from 4-string to 6-string? I have both but I practice on my 6-string mostly. Take 5 is one of those pieces I’ve always wanted to learn since jazz is just one of my favorite genres.
    Thanks Alex, you’re a winner!

  229. Hi Alex,
VERY nice, groovy, soulful, and simple. Not only does your playing blow the doors off, but you have that rare ability to teach what you play to anyone who seriously wants to learn. You are the man.
    Josh

  230. Nice Alex, sounds real smooth. I dig the meter and note choices. Also your subtle use of fills, you have me interested. I just saw the video, I’m looking forward to the breakdown and by the way, you don’t need to worry what anyone thinks of your playing, I couldn’t stand the thought of great bass player going down the tubes on good food and juice. Joke…why didn’t the bass player make it to his second lesson?……………………………..He got a gig! LoL
    Dave

  231. Hi Alex,
what a great investment i’ve made to purchase your bass secrets, my only regret is that i wish i had this a few years ago.
keep bringing it on bro, enjoy every minute of it and learnt so much

    every blessing josh

  232. WOW!!!! I think I started to late. I noticed some guy posted his age as 61. Well I was 70 this past August. I’ve just had my second lesson and my fingers are killin’ me, but I’m not quitting. It’s for my own enjoyment and to jam with my friends. Your videos are great and I’ll keep coming back. Keep it up.
    J C

  233. Great video, I don’t think I can be able to teach my self that at the mo. I haven’t touched my bass for ages…a shame 🙁 I think I need to go to the basics again because i am a total novice. Keep up the good work and keep us informed..Take care Alex.

  234. hi , young alex

with your course, please consider order for your next work done!!!!!
    thks very much
    Rocco

  236. Thanks for sharing your talent. As an aspiring bassist, I sure appeciate your expertise on “Take 5” and your BGS program. If you have any secrets to “hearing” intervals, I’d sure be much obliged. MikeyB

  237. Excellent Alex! I agree that it would be nice to be able to download the videos, even if we could import into iTunes so could use them on the road. Looking forward to more. I am also a late comer to playing the bass, still in the basics…but I have a vision. Best Regards, Ross

  238. NIce Bass! Not really my style im more of an emotional player than kinda of a smooth jazzy kinda guy…
They other thyings is i work in simpler more basic lines as im only begginingg..
ps – you look like such a natural!

  239. hey alex this is one sweet bass line man. im a New Zealander who just happened to come across your site and iv’e got to say its something special. keep the videos coming!

  240. Thanks for the tips you give on bass lines, sometimes it takes me a few bars to get the count of the song down. Explaining the 5/4 count was a great help!!! Keep up the great work.

  241. Alex you rock dude!! I bought and downloaded your bass tips software at christmas and just love the way you are so involved and passionate about it!!
i am in a rock band myself from the lovely island of England!!
Would love to have some feed back from you on what you think, im sorry if this is the wrong place to ask you.
    http://www.myspace.com/fatallyyours
look forward to hearing and seeing more of you!! just learning the take 5 lessons, so cool!!

  242. Nice playing, it sounds real smouth, but way to advanced for me, I hope that you do something that starts from the basics, in easy stages. then hopefuly I will eventually get to your standard, bit it will have to be done in single sylabuls, if you get my meening, take care and hope to here from you in the future

  243. What an awesome piece Alex. You look so relaxed and totally comfortable playing that monster. That is where I want to be too.

  244. Thanks for all of these free informations. I personally believe anybody who doesn’t succeed with your course did not put any effort. You make it as simple as possible. I am looking forward to purchasing everything you throw out there(smile). Great job, young man.

  245. Hi Alex: Nice job on the video, and it’s also nice to have a face to put to the emails I get from you. Great idea, and I’m looking forward to whatever comes next from you. (And hoping that some day I’ll look that relaxed when I’m playing!)

  246. Hey Alex,
That was brilliant, cant wait for more. I have just taken up bass at 59 years old and I am loving it.

    Thanks

  247. Hi Alex,
The video is great for us beginners.
It gives inspiration for what we are trying to achieve.
    Thanks and keep it up.
    Bill

  248. Nice smooth sound dude…………………. I would like to thank you for breaking down the lessons where i can understand. I am a self taught bass player, I’ve pick up a lot of nothing from all thoughts books and video’s that I bought. I learned a lot since I began in dec. again thx Charles

  249. Hi Alex,
I’m taking up bass again after playing in my 20’s (I’m now 52.) I happened upon your website and appreciate getting the emails and now this new video. I’m trying to decide whether I’m going to sign up for your course……
I’m curious about your right hand fingering in the Take 5??
    Todd

    1. Alex,
After about 30 years without performing on any stage, 6 months after starting to play bass again with the aid of your course, I played out on stage with a nice full band. Scared to death? YES. Tippsy? Yes. But I pulled it off with compliments and offers to do it again. I am 49 y/o. and haven’t done much but work for years.
I feel I am still in an infancy stage. But I play better than I ever did in my youth.
Will be hitting your course hard again from the begining to reinforce the layer upon layer method you have produced. My advice to anyone who wants to play bass at an older age is to use your course and practice.

  250. Hey Alex,
i didn’t see my original comment posted, I guess i mentioned God to much. It’s good to know where our gifts and talents come from. I love the course, I’m really geeting into the theory aspects of it. I even purchased the physical course and gave it to a friend who is just starting on the Bass and has a good ear and great potential, I know this is going to help him immensely, you should have seen his face when he realized what it was. Thanks for all you do for us bass players, keep sharing your wisdom with us,… our Bass guitars and we, thank you!!

    e.emery jr.

  251. For years i have played acoustic and electric guitar. Have tried a few times with friends/bass players to get into the bass thing but never really got a hold on it. Now that i have started your program i’m loving it and Mr acoustic is taking a back seat for the foreseeable. All the best James.

  252. Good job Alex,
As with Todd, I too played the bass, but while in high school. I put it dn for the wrong reason. I picked it up again at 50 and am in love w/the bass guitar. I’ve been using the “Bass Guitar Secrets” home study course for some time now and it’s helped me greatly. However I would like to see from you (because I like your style) “How To” video(s). W/in it some close-up shots of …. would be good. Price? To get to where I want to be, don’t concern yourself. Iam sure what ever U ask will be fair $ for the level of work required to develope an quality product.

    Post Scrip
I like Jazz and “Take Five” is a very good comp. Keep up the good work.

    Ezra

  253. Hi Alex,

The video of “Take 5” was amazing. Your left hand seems to glide effortlessly up and down the fret board, and the groove was hypnotic.
    Very nice!!!!

  254. Alex, I enjoyed the smooth moves and execution on the neck. I thought it was a little busy though. Now keep in mind I’m from the old school, that’s why I’m here now wanting to learn new techniques. I would very much like to here your licks along with the melody of Take 5, I’m sure that would probably straighten out my busy thoughts.
I’m looking forward to the lessons when they come in and maybe they will straighten out this old timer from the 60’s. I came up learning the licks from Mo-Town and Beach tunes, so you see whare I’m coming from.
    Keep up the good work

  255. Wassup Alex,

Your video on Take 5 is tight man. I lpve it. I’ve been subscribed to your course, and it’s great. I’ve played bass (4 – string) in my 20’s now and then also, teaching myself. Now that I’m 52 also, I’m regaining my interest again, and your course has helped me out tremendously. I’m with a 5 – string bass now, and I planned on continuing with you in command. (Smile) Kepp up the good work, and keep sending those tips our way. Man, you’re great on that bass. (Smile)

    Best Regards,

  257. Alex,
What bass were you playing in this video. It looks a lot like the Pedulla I play. Great video.

    Thanks.
    Dan

  258. Hi Alex,
I just ordered your course tonight and hope that it can help me. I have not really played the bass for years and was never very good. I have to admit though that the few things i tried from your samples online have give me some hope.

    God Bless,

    Martin

  259. thanks man for your smooth playing i,am a guitar player in a church praise band. but now i find the need and interest to learn bass i.am starting with 4 string. i hope your lessons will get me on the right track in jesus name. thanks alex

  260. Hi Alex
Love the series I too have noticed how effortless your playing is. I set up my own bass and would like to know if you have thoughts on action, pick up clearance and string gauge. I play mostly rock but want to slap that MAMA once in a while. Are we talking 2 different basses for this effect!! Any insight would be appreciated.
    Thanks John

  261. Smooth as silk! Only just signed up and can’t wait for the instructional stuff to arrive.
I’m stuck in the biggest rut and am looking forward to having my head opened to new ideas, and then passing those ideas onto my son.

  262. Hey Alex thats definately funky as heck! I saw you were asking for insite into what to do next and thought I might suggest something with a good walking bass cheers!

  263. Alex that was great. You know the first time that I heard that song I was 5 years old. My mother and I were moving from Little Rock, AR to San Francisco, CA. We were on a bus. Back then the buses played music over the sound system. I am a lot older than you so I know that song is older than you, too. I actually have the original version of “Take Five” by Dave Brubeck. It was 10 minutes and 52 seconds long. I really like what you have done with the bass line. I can’t wait until you upload the step by step video and since I can’t wait and because I already have the song I’ll be trying to play it along with Dave Brubeck. BTW: I ordered your entire Bass Guitar Secrests Package including the manuals and all the bonuses. I can’t wait to get my hands on them. The stuff that I have already learned from you has help me to think for my self and not just play what I hear other bass players play. Thanks Alex.

  264. Hey Alex, fantastic great job, hope your BGS will help me in my progress just to touch of a little bit playing on bass like you.

  265. I’ve learned more from you in 3 months….free, than I learned from that stupid lesson I ordered from the music store. And it was $30.

God’s using the bass to get me out of the house, you see for 20 years I battled depression & agoraphobia. Now after my first lesson…LOL I’m out of the house and playing with a bluegrass Gospel group, and with the praise & worship team at the church. I started learning about 4 months ago. I could do the thump thump, thump thump thing, you know. I had little or no experience and hadn’t spent but maybe 8 hrs. Total time actually playing a bass (in my life), so I was surprised when God chose the bass for me to learn, and play. During a momentary lapse of good judgement, I ordered a lesson from a music store online. It was like you described. I thought…. I’ve already learned all this stuff from the Internet ??? By then I’d ran across you on YouTube, and just your playing impressed me, but all the free tips & stuff you send me links to are great. I’m enjoying ’30 Day’s To Better Bass Playing” right now !

Looked like there hadn’t been many comments lately, so I thought I’d leave you one. I just wanted to thank you, and tell you that when I’ve finished reclaiming my life, and get the funds, I’m definitely going to be ordering some of your lessons.
You inspire me man. Really !! Somebody that uses there considerable talents, and proves he cares about his customers & fans (of which I’m one) by sharing with them. I’d rather spend my money (when I get some) with someone like that, rather than somebody that wants to sale me a lesson filled with stuff I can get free off the Internet. You can find scale PDF’s, and players, tuners, video’s, and all kinds of advice, but it’s all so impersonal and frankly you never really feel like you get to know any of them. Or trust them. If you give away everything you’ve given me in just the past 3 months…free, I can’t wait to get the “good stuff”

  266. Hi Alex. Great just to hear some other stuff than the normal. Catchy is there a guy who do it the same way for upright or double bass beginners. Or would you do it? Since then i will try to get a better e-bass player.

    greetings from Germany BB

  267. Very nice. Thanks for putting up this video. Its an encouragement heheh makes me want to keep playin the bass guitar. Keep it cool

  268. this sounds like a really cool song man, keep it up man you doing great. look forward to all the stuff u have to share, teaches me alot, bless up

  269. That was nice and smooth. As a bass player my main focus has always been on fluidity and the smooth transition of passage. Complicate is not always better and from the video you obviously have great affinity for your art. Looking forward to starting the course.

  270. Alex
Thank you for all your work making this great program. I am a disabled 57 year old who played bass in a rock and roll band in the late 60’s. My aspiration is to play bass in a studio to help support myself. I currently play bass in a church band and eagerly look forward to learning from you. This video shows me what CAN happen with hard work and lots of practice. Thanks again Alex.

    Just call me ‘Spenders’

    PS
    Great song

  271. Hello Alex,it is 01-18-1968 and i just bought your course along with my first bass.I was told by a friend about you and this program.I have no experience playing the bass and look forward to your lesson plan.I really enjoyed the recent video of take 5,i hope someday to be playing like that, right now it is a dream as i always wanted to play the instrument.Thank you for giving such good detail of playing the song and how to do it,not just watch you play, great breakdown, especially the Jimiroqui lesson.Well gotta go,wish me luck…Kris.

  272. Alex,
Been wanting to play for many years. First I got the bass chopz, then the full lesson kit. Love your style relaxed and at ease. With your help and a lot of practice I should be on my way.
    Blessings,
    Bob

  273. Hey Alex,

It’s great to see the song played on video. In addition to the theory, I can see the position and pattern you’re playing and pick it up faster. I’ve noticed several comments about your axe. It has a wonderful melodic tone. I play a Yamaha BB614 and I think Yamaha basses are a tremendous value.

    Regards, Ron

  274. Excellent——But a bit of a one off with the 5-4 and 10 chord bridge or whatever- i have it on the guitar but had no hope to follow you on my porr bass ,but always later with exercise?????????

  275. Hey I found this page a few months ago and I am hooked. I have been watching your videos over, and over again. I have been playing Bass for about a year, and half. It is one of the greatest intraments to play, cause baby we just grove. the only other Ihtrament that I play is the drums. I do have one problem with playingthe bass is I think that my fingers are too short. Ihave very large plams, which are good for massage(I do massage for a living, and love it). So I don’t know if you have some way the I can get my hands in right postion, and not hurt my wrist at the same time.

  276. PLEASE teach me to play like that! What a great bass line. My mouth was watering and my throat was dry, all at the same time. 🙂

Keep up the great blog, Alex. We are all lovin’ it.

    Tip

  277.
